To Our Valued Partners

As of June 4, 2025, the new Section 232 tariff updates for steel and aluminum imports are officially in effect. These changes impact tariff rates, entry procedures, FTZ treatment, and valuation methods.

There’s been a lot of talk about these changes being more complex or more expensive — but that’s not always the case. In fact, the new structure may reduce duties for some shipments thanks to a clearer format:

👉 The 50% tariff now applies only to the steel or aluminum portion of the product — not the entire invoice value.

Here’s a quick breakdown of what’s new:

✅ Tariff increase from 25% to 50% for most steel and aluminum imports
➡️ UK remains at 25% until July 9 under the U.S.–UK Economic Prosperity Framework

✅ Split-entry now required for mixed-content products
➡️ Declare metal and non-metal content separately, each with its own HTS code

✅ Melt & pour (steel) and smelt & cast (aluminum) country codes now mandatory
➡️ Must use ISO alpha-2 format (e.g., CN, MX, DE) on entries

✅ No drawback allowed for Section 232 entries

✅ Foreign Trade Zone (FTZ) entries must be under Privileged Foreign status
➡️ Otherwise, the 50% rate applies at time of withdrawal

✅ New Reciprocal Tariff stacking rules
➡️ IEEPA tariffs may apply to non-metal content for some countries

✅ Derivative goods now treated by content
➡️ Only the metal content receives 232, non-metal may face reciprocal tariffs
